CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 49 University of Virginia men’s tennis team swept Maryland in its final Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season, 7-0, on Tuesday (April 10) at Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers finished their ACC schedule with a 4-4 record and now own an 11-5 overall record.

UVa swept all three doubles matches while playing with an altered lineup. Fourth-years Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) remained at No. 1 singles. Virginia’s regular No. 2 doubles team of Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) and Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) took the day off, leaving the No. 3 doubles team of Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and Jonathan Chou (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) to play at No. 2. Third-year Jason Romesburg (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) and second-year Gregory Alpert (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) played together and won at No. 3.

In singles, Vahaly and Montgomery won in their usual spots at No. 1 and No. 2. Hunter, who is regular in the rotation at No. 5, played at No. 3, while Romesburg played four, Chou five, and Alpert six. Alpert defeated Greg Chambers, 6-3, 6-1, for his first career ACC victory. Romesburg and Chou collected their first ACC wins of the season, defeating Larry Chou and Dan Kenshalo, respectively.

The match marked the final ACC match in the careers of UVa fourth-years Hunter, Montgomery and Vahaly. Hunter finished his ACC singles career 11-13, while Montgomery finished 19-12, including a 7-1 clip this year. Vahaly wrapped up his remarkable ACC singles career with a 28-3 overall record. He did not lose a match during his final two years of ACC regular season play.
