CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team swept a doubleheader from Elon College 4-0 and 11-4 Wednesday (April 18) and in the process set a new school record for victories in a season. The Cavaliers are now 43-13 on the season and broke the former school record of 42 wins in a single season set in 1989. In addition to the team victories record, Virginia fourth-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) broke her own single season hits record with her 68th hit of the season. Young went six for eight in the doubleheader and now has 72 hits this year.

Young, who went six for eight in the doubleheader with four runs and three RBI, broke her own 1999 school record of 68 hits in a season with her second hit of the first game of the twinbill. She increased her school record hit total to 72 with a four for four effort in the second game. Young also holds UVa’s career hits record with 269.

In the first game, first-year pitcher Jessica Edwards (Santa Ana, Calif./Orange Lutheran) tossed a two-hit shutout in the Cavaliers’ 4-0 victory. Edward struck out five and walked four in improving her record to 9-4 on the season. Young had a pair of hits and scored two runs in the first game, while second-year third baseman Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) was two for two with two walks and a RBI. The Cavaliers scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings in the victory.

Shawn Browne (6-10) took the loss for Elon. She gave up just five hits and allowed three earned runs. Browne struck out six batters, but walked seven. Center fielder Alyssa Martin had both hits for the Phoenix.

The Cavaliers pounded out 12 hits in their 11-4 victory in the second game. Young led the way with four hits in as many at-bats and also drove in three runs and scored twice. Third-year center fielder Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) and first-year third baseman Tracy Sherman (San Clemente, Calif./St. Margaret’s Episcopal) were both two for three with two runs and a RBI. First-year shortstop Heather Field (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) drove in a pair of runs with a double and a suicide squeeze bunt. Third-year pitcher Erin Allinder (Norco, Calif./Norco) earned the victory in the circle and improved her record to 12-3. She allowed four unearned runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Shannon Courtney (4-9) took the loss for Elon as she gave up eight runs in 2.1 innings of work. Gina Forcinito and Kristen Wallace had two hits apiece for Elon (12-31).

The Cavaliers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and after Elon scored a run in the top of the third, UVa broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-1 lead.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday, April 21 when it hosts Pittsburgh in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at The Park in Charlottesville.
