Virginia Men's Tennis Defeats Georgia Tech, 4-0, in ACC Quarterfinal Match

ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 44 University of Virginia men’s tennis team upset #27 and third seed Georgia Tech, 4-0, at the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Championship in Orlando, Fla. on Friday (April 20). The win propelled sixth-seeded Virginia into the semifinals of the tournament for the sixth consecutive year. The Cavaliers will face Clemson in the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday (April 21) at 1:00 p.m.
UVa’s Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) defeated Roger Anderson and David Wright at No. 1 doubles, 9-7. Georgia Tech captured No. 3 doubles, 8-6, but Virginia’s Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) and Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) defeated Romain Coirault and Joao Menano, 8-4, to capture the lone doubles point.
In singles, Vahaly defeated Anderson at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3. It was Vahaly’s 34th victory of the season, which leaves him one shy of the school record — which he set last season — for singles matches won in a season. Montgomery also moved into one win of his personal record for singles victories, defeating Coirault, 6-3, 6-1. Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) cemented the victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Joao Menano. Hunter’s win avenged a three-set loss to Menano in the teams’ previous meeting.
Virginia (14-6) will face Clemson in tomorrow’s semifinal match at 1:00 p.m. It will be the second meeting between the two teams this season. Virginia won the earlier confrontation, 5-2, on March 30 in Charlottesville. The seventh-seeded Tigers advanced by virtue of a 4-3 upset win over second seed North Carolina.
