ATHENS, Ga. – University of Virginia men’s tennis players Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) advanced to the second round of the doubles draw at the 2001 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga. Friday (May 25). The top-seeded duo dispatched Dumitru Caradima and Shuon Madden from Texas A&M, 6-4, 6-4, and will play a second round match on Saturday (May 26).

With the win, Vahaly and Montgomery improve their overall record to 32-7 and advance to the second round for the first time in their collegiate careers. The fourth-years will take on Stanford’s K.J. Hippensteel and Alex Kim in the second round. Vahaly and Montgomery lost to Kim and his partner Geoff Abrams in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.

Vahaly advanced to the third round in the singles draw Friday (May 25) as well. He will play his third round singles match tomorrow (May 26).

First Round: Brian Vahaly (UVa) def. Nathan Overholser (Florida), 6-2, 6-1.Second Round: Brian Vahaly (UVa) def. Jean Simon (Texas), 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

DOUBLES First Round: Montgomery/Vahaly (UVa) def. Caradima/Madden (Texas A&M), 6-4, 6-4.
