CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Virginia volleyball team lost its Atlantic Coast Conference opener to North Carolina 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-17) Thursday evening (September 20) at Carmichael Auditorium. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels improve to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the victory.

Virginia fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) led the Cavaliers with seven kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Fischer also had one service ace, the 129th of her career, which moves her into fourth place all-time at UVa. Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) totaled five kills, 10 digs and two blocks.

Nicole Reis led the Tar Heels with a match-high 13 kills, four digs and three service aces, while Holly Straus drilled 10 kills on 13 attempts for a .769 hitting percentage. Laura Greene added eight kills and a match-high 15 digs for UNC.

North Carolina hit an impressive .400 in the match, while the Cavaliers hit just .149. The Tar Heels also registered a 41-33 edge in digs.

The Cavaliers return to action tomorrow night (September 21) when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to play N.C. State at 7:00 p.m.
