Charlottesville, VA – The Cavalier defense withstood 17 Old Dominion corners, but the Monarchs (6-2) were still able to slip three goals into the Virginia cage, including the last two, to come from behind to beat the Cavaliers 3-2. Virginia (4-2) outshot the Monarchs 9-8, including 5-3 in the second half, but ODU stuck their first shot of the second stanza in the back of the boards for the game winner.

The Monarchs jumped out on top 1-0 just 4:24 into the game as Tara Herrman stuck in a scramble in front of the cage following a penalty corner. The Cavaliers answered right back as Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) picked a missed reception by the Monarchs in the ODU backfield and brought it into the circle. The Monarch goalie came out to make a play on the ball and Jessie Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) picked up the loose ball and did a little lift to send the ball into the boards to tie the game 77 seconds later.

Virginia took the lead 3:17 later as Coleman and Slocum again connected on a broken play. Coleman intercepted a pass at midfield and sent a through ball up to Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) at the 25. Nicholson dribbled into the circle and lost the ball, but as ODU tried to clear, Slocum picked up the loose ball and sent the ball across the circle into the far boards, giving Virginia the lead with 26:02 remaining in the first half.

Five minutes later the Monarchs got another corner and the direct shot hit Virginia’s post player, giving Old Dominion a stroke. Adrienne Yoder converted the stroke and the Monarchs tied the game 2-2 with 21:23 to play in the half. The teams went into the break tied at 2-2.

Just 3:36 into the second half the Monarchs took the ball down the left side of the field and Melissa Leonetti fired in a shot from the top left of the circle, which turned out to be the eventual game-winner.

Virginia embarks on a three-game road trip which starts on Wednesday as the Cavaliers travel to Richmond to face the VCU Rams. Game time in Richmond is 4:00 pm.
