CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #2 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded a 2-0 shutout victory over the visiting East Carolina Pirates in front of 1,489 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium. The Cavaliers used goals by Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Kenny Arena (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and two timely saves by goalkeeper Kyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) to post their ninth shutout of the season.

UVa jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Kirk Dinnal (Newton, Mass./Beaver Country Day) gained possession of the ball near midfield and blew past the Pirate defense. Dinnal connected with Eskandarian on a cross that he put away for a goal just 10:40 into the match on a one-timer past ECU goalkeeper R.J. Marvinney to give Virginia a 1-0 lead. Eskandarian’s goal, his eighth of the season, eventually turned out to be the game-winning score and was his fifth game-winning goal of the year.

After taking their one-goal lead into halftime, the Cavaliers came out in the second period and added an insurance goal at 64:57 when Jacob LeBlanc (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) sent a corner kick into a group of players in front of the Pirates’ goal. UVa’s Arena and Eskandarian went up for the ball, and Arena was credited with the goal after heading the ball into the net before an East Carolina defender could keep the ball from traveling into the goal.

Virginia’s Singer posted two saves and improved to 3-0-0 (two shutouts) as the starting goalkeeper for the Cavaliers, while Marvinney tallied a game-high three saves in a losing effort.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 13-0-1 overall, while the loss drops East Carolina’s record to 5-9-0 on the year. The win gives UVa a 1-0-0 lead in the all-time series.

The Cavaliers will return to home action on Tuesday, October 30th when UVa hosts the UNC-Greensboro Spartans. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Kl?ckner Stadium. The Pirates will return to home action on Wednesday, October 31st when ECU hosts the N.C. State Wolfpack. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be played at Bunting Field.
