Charlottesville, VA – Led by four players in double figures, the University of Virginia women’s basketball team defeated the Houston Jaguars, 72-67, at University Hall. Freshman LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) led all players with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Anna Prillaman (Midlothian, Va.) added 12 points for the Cavaliers, scoring nine in the second half. Freshman Jocelyn Logan-Friend (Cheverly, Md.) scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, while senior guard Telisha Quarles (Louisa, Va.) finished with 11 points.

Virginia trailed by 12 points just 4:34 into the game, but went on a 25-13 run to tie the game with 4:27 reamaining in the half. The Cavaliers took a 40-39 lead into the break when Quarles hit a jumper as time expired. The Cavaliers never trailed the rest of the way, and led by as many as eight points on two occasions, before holding on for the five-point victory. The Jaguars were led by Abby Garchek, who scored 13 points and shot 4-5 from three-point range. Former Virginia player Tora Suber scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds for Houston in her return to University Hall.

Both teams shot well from outside, as the Cavaliers made 6-15 (40.0 percent) three-pointers and the Jaguars hit 8-14 from behind the arc (57.1 percent). Overall, Virginia shot 41.4 percent (24-58) from the field and Houston shot 42.1 percent (24-57). The Jaguars outrebounded the Cavaliers, 40-35.

Virginia opens the regular season on Friday, November 16, when they travel to Hampton University for a game against the Pirates. That game will begin at 7:00 pm.
