Cavalier Hockey Falls to #3 Wake Forest 5-1

The Virginia hockey team forced a corner with under two minutes to play in the first half and the three captains, Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional), Mason White (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), and Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) were all a part of the goal that brought the Cavaliers within one at the break. But that would be all the scoring that Virginia would get, and the Deacons mustered three more in the second half, sending them to the 5-1 victory in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Wake Forest got on the board first as Jennie Shelton took a pass from Kelly Doton to the cage with 13:39 to play in the first half. Seven-and-a-half minutes later Jemima Cameron sent a long ball into the circle and Shelton ran onto it and sent it into the net for a 2-0 lead with 6:02 to go in the first half of play.

With time running down in the first half, Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) sent a through ball upfield that Coleman caught in the upper left corner. She brought it into the circle and forced a corner that the Cavaliers converted on a direct shot from Coleman. Virginia outcornered the Deacons 4-1 in the first half but trailed on the scoreboard 2-1.

Again in the second half the Cavaliers and the Deacons played to a stalemate for the first twenty minutes, but Wake Forest broke through as Shelton sent a cross from the upper right corner and Heather Aughinbaugh collected it in the circle and sent it into the boards for a 3-1 lead with 13:08 to play.

With 5:15 to play Coleman was assessed a yellow card for a hard foul and was sent off for the remainder of the game. In that time Shelton struck twice, the first off a broken corner play from Cameron and the second off an assist from Auginbaugh.

The Cavaliers end the 2001 campaign with a record of 14-8 and a berth in the Elite Eight.
