CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team is seeded eighth in the 2001 ACC Championship which takes place November 15-18 in Tallahassee, Fla. at Lucy McDaniel Arena at Tully Gym. The Cavaliers will play ninth-seeded N.C. State in the first round on Thursday evening, November 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Virginia enters the 2001 ACC Championship with a 7-17 overall record and concluded regular season ACC play with a 3-13 record. The Wolfpack stand at 6-20 overall and 1-15 in the ACC. The winner of Thursday night’s match advances to the quarterfinals to play top-seeded Duke on Friday (November 16) at 1:30 p.m. Duke is 21-3 overall and won the ACC regular season title with a 13-3 record.

The Cavaliers swept the 2001 regular season series from N.C. State with identical 3-1 victories. UVa has won 11 consecutive meetings in the series and closed the gap in the all-time series to 19-17. In the first meeting of the 2001 season on September 21, Virginia posted to a 3-1 (26-30, 30-19, 30-18, 30-21) victory over N.C. State at Reynolds Coliseum. UVa again lost the first game in the second meeting at University Hall on October 21, but bounced back to win the match 3-1 (26-30, 30-19, 30-18, 30-21).

Fourth-year outside hitter Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) leads the Cavaliers in kills with 213 (2.60 per game), as well as service aces with 25. Harmon is also second on the team in digs with 171, only trailing second-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft’s (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) total of 183. Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) is second in kills with 209 and leads the team with 73 blocks. Boyle also tops the team with a .276 hitting percentage.
