CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The University of Virginia women’s basketball team won its third straight home game with a 60-58 victory over intrastate rival Virginia Tech on Thursday evening.

The Cavaliers improved to 4-2 overall. The Hokies, who were ranked No. 26 as the top team receiving votes in the polls, fell to 3-2.

In the first half, Tech jumped out to a six-point lead. The Cavaliers responded with a 13-0 run to close out the stanza and take over the lead, 34-26, at intermission.

In the second half, UVa went ahead by 11 points twice, but the Hokies battled back. Lisa Guarneri’s three-pointer with 4:02 remaining gave Tech the lead, 53-52. Sophomore Anna Prillaman (Midlothian, Va.) nailed a trey with 1:32 to go to tie the game at 55-55. Freshmen LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) added a 16-foot jumper for the final bucket, before senior Telisha Quarles (Louisa, Va.) made three free throws to seal the win.

“I thought Tech played really well to come back in that stanza,” said UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. “We were very poised to hang on. Our fans did a great job and put us over the top.”

Quarles and Tech’s Ieva Kublina were named Dominion Virginia Power Players of the Game.

Quarles paced UVa with 17 points, while Blue added 13. Kulbina led the Hokies with 18 points. Sarah Hicks had 12, and Nicole Jones added 11.

“Telisha had one of the best games of her collegiate career,” Ryan said.

“We should not have had to make a run,” said Virginia Tech head coach Bonnie Henrickson. “We’ll bounce back.”

Overall, Virginia held the rebounding edge, 34-29.

“It was a definitely a big win for us,” Quarles said. “Great win. Everyone stepped up.”

Virginia hosts UC-Santa Barbara on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. at University Hall. Charlottesville’s WINA Radio (1070 AM) will broadcast the game live.
