Women's Soccer Falls In Shootout With Florida State

After defeating Duke yesterday in overtime, the Uva womens soccer fell to Florida State in a shootout on Friday night, in the second round of the ACC Tournament. The game remained scoreless at 0-0 through regulation and four overtime periods, before Florida State won in the shootout, 3-2. It marks the second year in a row the Cavaliers are eliminated from the ACC Tournament via shootout.
“I was really proud of the way our team played,” head coach Steve Swanson said after the game. “I thought we playedwell all game long, even in the overtime. Sometimes soccer is not a very forgiving game. You look at the shotsand you look at the way we played tonight, you have to feel bad for ourteam a little bit, but you have to give credit to Florida State.”
Florida State’s Meredith Jones was the first to connect, after Sarah Lane and Kelly Worden missed on their first tries. Florida State’s Heather Dyche also missed on her first try. Gillian Hatch connected to even the shootout at 1-1, before Florida State’s Jenny Garcia missed. Ashley Meeker connected, and the Cavaliers were up 2-1. Jessica Schofield evened things up for Florida State. Lori Lindsey missed on her shot, as Florida State’s Ashlee Fontes connected, giving Florida State a 3-2 edge in the shootout, and the victory.
The Cavaliers dominated Florida State, firing 36 shots through regulation and four overtimes, allowing just three Seminole shots. The game went scoreless through two regulation periods and four overtime periods. UVa outshot the Seminoles 9-0 in the first period, 11-2 in the second and 16-1 in the combined four overtime periods. Lori Lindsey led the team with 10 shots, followed by Lindsay Gusick with 6, Meredith Rhodes with 4 and Erin Engelhardt and Sarah Lane who each had 3. Jodi Clugston made two saves and played the entire 150 minutes without allowing a goal, while the Cavalier offense wore down Ali Mims, who played ninety minutes before being relieved by Kerry York at the end of regulation.
The Cavaliers now stands at 14-3-2, and are in excellent shape to receive and possibly host an NCAA Tournament game, as they now await word on their bid. First round games for the NCAA Tournament will be held on Nov. 16.
