Women's Soccer Knocked Off In Virginia Soccer Classic

The Virginia Cavaliers lost their first game of the season, a 1-0 decision to Auburn, in the first meeting between the two schools. In the process, Auburn took first place in the Virginia Soccer Classic, while Laura Gaworecki, Lori Lindsey and Kelly Worden earned spots on the all-tournament team. Virginia now stands at 2-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, Sarah Steinmann scored an unassisted goal at the 60:45 mark of the game. The Cavaliers fought back, outshooting the Tigers 5-2 for the remainder of the game, but were unable to connect. Anne Abernethy, making her second start in as many games, takes the loss despite making six saves.

“It’s disappointing to have another team come in and beat you in your house,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “You have to give Auburn credit, they came in and really disrupted us. It’s a good wakeup call for us.”

The Cavaliers return to action next Saturday, Sept. 15, as they host in-state rival William & Mary, at 5 p.m. at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers hit the road for two games after that, as they begin ACC play at N.C. State on Sept. 19 and at Florida State on Sept. 23.

NOTES – The Cavaliers outshot Auburn 10-9 for the game … Lindsey led the team with three shots, followed by Alyssa Benitez and Lindsay Gusick with two.
