GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia first-year right fielder/pitcher Val Sevilla (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week as announced Monday (February 18). Sevilla threw a no-hitter against East Carolina and hit .480 with 12 hits in 25 at-bats as the Cavaliers went 5-2 in the Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C. For her efforts, Sevilla was named to the Triangle Classic All-Tournament team.

In her first collegiate start, Sevilla threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over East Carolina on Saturday (February 16). She struck out one and walked one, and drove in the game-winning run with a triple in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sevilla made three pitching appearances in the Cavaliers’ season-opening tournament and was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. She allowed only one hit in 14.1 innings of work while striking out eight and walking three. Her first collegiate win came against UNC-Greensboro on Friday (February 15) when she tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief in UVa’s 4-3 triumph. Sevilla also threw five one-hit innings against Tennessee on Sunday (February 17).

At the plate, Sevilla hit an impressive .480 (12-25). She scored three runs, drove in three and was two for two on stolen base attempts. Sevilla registered a pair of game-winning RBI in 1-0 Virginia victories. Her first game-winning RBI came against East Carolina as she drilled a triple to score Katie Weinberg. In the bottom of the eighth inning against Illinois (February 17), Sevilla’s fielder’s choice grounder to second scored Lauren Dennis with the game-winning run.

The Cavaliers, who stand at 5-2 on the year, return to action Friday, February 22 through Sunday, February 24 when they compete in the Tennessee Tech Tournament in Cookeville, Tenn. UVa opens the tournament against host Tennessee Tech at 3:00 p.m. Friday.
