UVa Men's Tennis Dominates Navy, 5-2

Charlottesville, Va. – The UVa men’s tennis team picked up its second consecutive victory of the season, with a 5-2 win over Navy, on Saturday night at the Boar’s Head Inn Tennis Center, in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers earned a key doubles point, thanks to a victory by the team of Stephen Nolen and Gregory Alpert. With the match at 30/40, 7-8, Nolen and Alpert came back to earn a 9-8 (4) victory over Navy’s Cameron Lickle and Phil Volgaris.
“I’m so proud of how hard these guys competed,” head coach Brian Boland added after the match. “They really came out ready to play tonight, and it was good to see them fight the way they did. It’s a true testament to all the individuals on this team.”
With two freshmen and another newcomer playing in his first year of eligibility, this marks one of the Cavaliers youngest teams in recent history, but have fared well thus far, as they stand with a 5-1 record this season, including a 2-1 spring record.
Jason Romesburg picked up his team-leading ninth victory of the season, with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ryan Osgood, at No. 2 singles. Romeburg teamed with Jonathan Chou at No. 1 doubles, to pick up an 8-3 victory over Osgood and David Lee. The Cavaliers picked up three more singles wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, all in straight sets and in very commanding fashion. Sophomore Gregory Alpert defeated Chris McGrath, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4, while freshman Jay Curtis defeated Todd Thurston, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5. Alpert improves to 5-3, while Curtis is 8-1, with the best winning percentage of anyone on the team. Dan Lempa picked up his first career win in a Cavalier dual match at No. 6, defeating Phil Volgaris, 6-4, 6-0.
The Cavaliers travel to Norfolk, Va., next weekend, to take part in the Fabulous Four Round Robin Tournament, and return home for their next dual match on March 6, when they host Radford at 1 p.m. at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
