CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team defeated the Seton Hall Pirates by the score of 2-0 in a seven inning contest at the UVa Baseball Stadium. The game was originally schedule to be the first game of a doubleheader, but the second contest of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain.

With the game tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the second inning and the bases loaded with Cavaliers, Virginia’s Andrew Riesenfeld recorded the game-winning hit when he posted a two-run, RBI-double to left field to drive in Robert Word and Chris Sweet. Word reached base on a single and Sweet reached base after a walk before each player scored a run on Riesenfeld’s hit.

Despite five of its seven hits being doubles, the Pirates were unable to score a run thanks to UVa starting pitcher Chris Gale. Gale picked up the win after going seven innings and allowing no runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. SHU’s Isaac Pavlik pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits with a game-high nine strikeouts in the loss.

With the victory, Virginia’s overall record improves to 7-2, while the loss drops Seton Hall’s record to 2-5 on the year. The Cavaliers and Pirates will return to action on Sunday, March 3rd when Virginia and Seton Hall play the first game of a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 noon at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
