Final Stats

The Virginia Cavaliers opened today’s game with a 10-0 run behind a hat trick from Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and three assists from Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and four saves from Andrea Pfeiffer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) as they defeated #16 Old Dominion 16-4 in Charlottesville. Aumiller finished with two goals and five assists, which gives her 42 career assists and the #8 ranking all-time at Virginia in that catagory. She is only the fifth Cavalier in school history to record five assists in a game and the first to do so since Anna Yates had five against Old Dominion in 1995. Virginia’s Morgan Thalenberg (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) led both teams with six ground balls and also controlled three draws as the Cavaliers won the battle of draw controls 15-7. Three Cavaliers, Banks, Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Cary Chasney (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) all notched hat tricks in today’s game and each of these three also recorded an assist to help the Cavaliers.

Virginia got on the board just over a minute into the game as Sambus picked up an Old Dominion overthrow in the midfield and brought the ball into the Cavalier offensive zone. She took a pass from Molly Cangemi (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) as she drove to the cage and converted it for the opening goal. On the ensuing draw, Banks controlled the ball and outletted the ball to Amy Appelt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who took it straight to the cage for a 2-0 lead ten seconds later. Banks scored the next goal just over a minute later as Thalenberg picked up an Old Dominion overthrow in the midfield and brought the ball into the Virginia offensive end, where the Cavaliers worked it around and Aumiller fed Banks on an opposite post feed 2:51 into the contest.

After Old Dominion controlled the next draw, Pfeiffer intercepted a Monarch pass and started a clear that the Cavaliers turned into a goal as Thalenberg passed the ball to a cutting Banks in front of the cage and Banks scored, putting Virginia up 4-0 and forcing the Monarchs to take a timeout.

Thalenberg won the next draw and the Cavaliers set the offense, which saw Cangemi feed a driving Sambus. Sambus scored, putting Virginia up 5-0.

Aumiller notched a pair of goals after that, with the first one coming on an 8-meter shot after she was fouled in the arc. She was also the beneficiary of a Chasney pass three minutes later after Virginia’s Molly Urlock (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale) got the ball back for the Cavaliers with a loose ball pickup after an Old Dominion overthrow at midfield.

Pfeiffer made a point-blank save on Old Dominion’s next shot and she started a transition that brought the ball down to the Old Dominion goal, where Aumiller fed Ashleigh Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) who was cutting down the arc. Haas’ goal, 22:30 into the game, gave the Hoos a 9-0 lead.

Virginia went up 10-0 after the Monarchs were called for a moving pick in their offensive end, giving the Hoos possession of the ball. In the UVa offensive end, Aumiller fed Lauren Keller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) who crossed to the middle of the cage and scored, putting UVa up 10-0.

Old Dominion got on the scoreboard just before halftime as Suzanne Wosczyna drove the goalline and scored with 2:01 to play in the half, breaking up the Cavalier shutout. Virginia tacked on one goal just before the end of the half as Aumiller fed Courtney Young (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) on the crease. Young quicksticked the ball into the cage with six seconds remaining in the half as UVa led 11-1.

Sambus scored the opening goal in the second half as well as she tried to dump the ball into the middle of the arc but instead the ball got behind the Monarch keeper and into the cage, putting Virginia up 12-1.

The Monarchs then went on a minirun as Woscyzna scored a pair of goals three minutes apart to cut the deficit to nine at 12-3 with 15:17 to play. After the first Monarch goal Pfeiffer made way for Liz McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Taft).

Virginia’s Chasney then scored two goals of her own 85 seconds apart. The first came after Elizabeth Pinney (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) won the draw and threw a long pass to Chasney, who ran in from the restraining line. Her second goal also came off a draw control as Ashley Dodson (Annapolis, Md./Severn) won the draw and got the ball to Sambus, who drove to the cage. Sambus flipped the ball to a wide-open Chasney, who converted the pass for the Cavaliers’ 14th goal. Young notched Virginia’s next goal as she drove to the cage with just over ten minutes to play. Chasney notched her hat trick goal after Sambus caused a Monarch turnover on the restraining line and the Cavaliers took the ball into their offensive zone. Aumiller fed Chasney from the opposite post and Chasney quicksticked it into the cage to close out the scoring for Virginia. After the goal Mary Beth LaVerghetta (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made her first appearance in the cage this year for Virginia, replacing McCarthy.

Old Dominion scored the final goal of the game as Danielle Hensil capitalized on a Virginia offsides situation and took the ball the length of the field and scored with 1:43 to play.

With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 2-1 on the season while Old Dominion falls to 1-1. Virginia travels to Richmond for a game against the Spiders on Friday at 4:00 pm.
