RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia’s Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) has been named the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Player of the Year for the state of Virginia, the newspaper announced in its Tuesday edition.

The 6-0 forward became the first freshman to covet the state’s highest honor in the eight-year history of the award. She also became the third Cavalier to earn the honor, joining Wendy Palmer (1995) and Renee Robinson (2000).

Head coach Debbie Ryan, celebrating her 25th season with the Cavaliers, earned her second Times-Dispatch state Coach of the Year accolade. She also garnered the award in 2000.

Named to the state honorable mention team was senior Telisha Quarles (Louisa, Va.). The 5-8 guard is the Cavalier scoring leader and the sole senior with playing experience on the youthful UVa squad.

In NCAA First Round action, the No. 8 seed Cavaliers battle No. 9 seed Iowa on Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m. on ESPN2. Top seed and host Connecticut entertains No. 16 seed St. Francis at 1:30 p.m. The winners meet in Second Round action on Monday, March 18 at 9 p.m. on ESPN.
