Virginia won three titles at the Duke Relays this weekend, including John Welch in the javelin, as he qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships with his toss of 234′ 5″. Joining Welch on the winner’s podium were Kiamesha Otey, who took top honors in the long jump, and Eliese Mitchell, who won the shot put. Other medallists for the Cavaliers included James Catano, who took third in the 3000m run.

Shay Clark recorded Virginia’s fastest time this season in the 400, dipping below the 50 second mark with a 49.10 today. Zach Davis also lowered his 800 time, running 1:54.36 to better his time by half a second. Jeff Binggeli also lowered his team-leading time in the steeple, while Mike Riso jumped two centimeters higher than his season best in the high jump. Tim Bilmanis bettered his team-leading throw in the discus by almost two meters, while Welch became the first jjavelin thrower to pass 200 feet with his win today. The 4x100m team tied its season-best today.

Otey won the long jump with the Cavaliers’ first venture over six meters this season and also set the season-best in the 200, going 25.17. Erin O’Doherty lowered her best 800 this season by a second to take the team lead, while Sarah Folse lowered Virginia’s best 3000m time by two seconds. In the field, Annica White improved her pole vault best by ten centimeters and Mitchell tossed the shot past 14 meters for the first time this season.
