Charlottesville, Va. – Former University of Virginia men’s tennis player Brian Vahaly was named USTA Circuit Player of the Week, following his win over Michael Chang at the First Serve Entertainment Men’s Championships in Tarzana, Calif., last week. He advanced to the tournament final before falling to Eric Taino, 6-2, 7-6 (6). It’s the second time this year Vahaly has received the honor.

Vahaly, who turned pro after his graduation from UVa last May, has burst onto the pro tennis scene in just his first year. In addition to his runner-up finish in Tarzana, he won his third career USTA title at the Futures event in Brownsville, Texas. He reached the doubles final at the $50,000 Challenger in Dallas, and has advanced to three quarterfinals at the Futures events in Aventura, Fla., Delray Beach, Fla., and Houston.

In 2001, Vahaly won two titles on the USTA Professional Circuit, more than any other American. He won 18 of his final 20 matches to close out 2001. He is currently ranked No. 174 in the world in the latest ATP singles rankings.
