The Virginia women’s track team leads the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship after the first day. Kiamesha Otey and Eliese Mitchell both brought home victories in the long jump and discus respectively. Otey’s jump broke the ACC meet record, and automatically qualifies her for the NCAA meet. Dawn Cleary took second in the steeplechase with a time that shattered the school record by 23 seconds. The men’s team is fifth in the meet, led by John Welch who won his second ACC championship in the javelin, with a throw that automatically qualifies him for the NCAAs.

Kiamesha Otey (Quinton, VA, New Kent) won the championship in the long jump with an ACC meet record which also automatic qualified her for NCAAs. Her jump of 21’5.50″ bettered the previous mark, held by Virginia’s Dana Boone, by five inches. Otey is a 2002 Indoor All-American in the long jump, and before this jump she was ranked ninth in the nation. Otey has also qualified for the ACC finals in the 100m (11.67) and 200m (24.07) which will be run Saturday.

The men’s team is fifth in the ACC meet after the first day. John Welch (Upper St. Clair, PA, Upper St. Clair) started off the men’s team with a win the javelin. Welch threw 236’10.0″, which is also an automatic qualifying mark for NCAAs. Welch is a 2001 All American in the javelin, and was also the 1999 ACC champion. Before this throw, he was ranked fifth in the nation.

Eliese Mitchell (Narvon, PA, Garden Spot) is an ACC champion in the discus, taking the title on her last throw of the evening and moved her from fourth to first. Her throw of 171’2.0″ is a provisional qualifying mark for NCAAs and a season best. Mitchell also placed fourth in the hammer with a toss of 178’2.0″. Dawn Cleary (Woodbridge, VA, Woodbridge) broke her own school record and earned All-ACC honors with a second place finish in the steeplechase. She shattered her previous record of 10:25.49 by 23 seconds. Her time of 10:03.13 is a provisional qualifying mark for NCAAs, and she ranked ninth in the nation last week. First year Annie Bobiak (Media, PA, Villa Maria) earned All-ACC honors in the javelin (138’7.0″). Bobiak is a 2001 HS All-American and 2000 All-State for Pennsylvania.

Jane Maxwell (Charlotte, NC, Providence Day) earned fourth in the 10000m with a season best time of 35:22.82. Inhar Chong (Fairfax, VA, Fairfax) placed fifth in the discus with a 145’11.0″. Melanie Matthews (Waynesboro, VA, Waynesboro) finished fifth in the steeplechase and a personal season best of 10:13.31 which is also a provisonal qualifying mark for NCAAs. Annica White (Weston, MA, Weston) finished eighth in the pole vault (11’3.75″).

Jarrett Hagwood (Martinsville, VA, Laurel) jumped for 24’3.0″ which earned fourth in the long jump and is a season best. Tim Bilmanis (Hughesville, MD, Thomas Stone) finished fourth in the discus, with a season best throw of 166’6.0″. First year Pat Slattery (Flanders, NJ: Mt. Olive) and Jeff Binggeli (Charlottesville, VA, Charlottesville) finished seventh and eighth in the steeplechase. Slattery’s time of 9:18.81 is a season best time.

On the women’s side, Megan Schwartz (Morristown, NJ, Morristown) qualified for the 800m and 1500m finals that will be held tommorow. She ran the 800m in a 2:10.41, which is a season best time on the team. Her time of 4:25.75 in the 1500m is another season best and ranks her fifth in the final. Kimberlee Turko (Edison, NJ, John P. Stevens) will be running in the 100m HH. She qualified with a 14.03, which is a season best time. Curtrell Frye (Columbia, SC, Irmo) is third in the heptathlon (2960). In 2000, she earned All-ACC honors in this event.

Competing in the finals tomorrow will be Hagwood in the 110m HH and 400m IH. His time of 52.53 ranks him second coming into the 400IH final. He ranks second in the 110m HH (14.20). First year Gemayel Hazard (Hampton, VA, Bethel) qualified for finals in the 110 HH, his time ranks fourth (14.41). Herb Reid (Mt. Laurel, NJ, Lenape) will also be competing in the 400IH, his time was 55.36 and ranks him ninth. Matt Antunes (Lansdale, PA, North Penn) qualified in the 800m, he ranks fifth with a time of 1:52.04. Scott Kimball (Bridgewater, MA, Bridgewater-Ryn) has qualified for the 200m (21.46) final. He ranks eighth overall. Stephen Gross (State College, PA, State College) will be running in the 1500m, where he ran a 3:53.71, along with Walton Kingbery (Red Bank, NJ, Red Bank Regional) who ran a 3:57.41.
