BADIN LAKE, N.C – The University of Virginia men’s golf team finished seven at the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at the Old State Club at Uwharrie Point on Sunday.

Georgia Tech, ranked No. 1 nationally, claimed its second consecutive ACC championship with a 27-under 837. N.C. State, which shot the day’s best round at 274, moved up to second to finish just four strokes behind the Yellow Jackets with a 841 (-23). Second-ranked Clemson was third at 845 (-19). The Cavaliers carded a 874 (+10).

Individually, UNC’s Dustin Bray captured medalist honors by two strokes with an 11-under 205. Georgia Tech teammates Nicholas Thompson and Matt Weibring tied for second with a 207 (-9).

UVa senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) fired a four-under 68 in the final round for a 210 (-6) to finish eighth overall. Junior Thomas Lee (Guttenburg, N.J.) was 31st with a 221 (+5). Sophomore Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) tied for 32nd with a 222 (+6), while junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) tied for 36th with a 223 (+7). Freshman Scott McMahon (Austin, Texas) was 44th with a 238 (+22).

Virginia now awaits an invitation to the 2002 NCAA East Regional Championship on May 16-18 in Roswell, Ga.
