AUSTIN, Texas – The Virginia volleyball team lost its 2002 season-opening match to San Diego 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-25) Friday afternoon (August 30) at Gregory Gym in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. The Cavaliers will look for their first victory of the season when they play host Texas at 8:00 p.m. this evening.

UVa was led by second-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) who notched 10 kills with no errors and a .400 hitting percentage. Geocaris also added five digs and two block assists. Third-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) registered seven kills and seven digs. Second-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) dished out 26 assists and added four digs and three block assists. Third-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) paced the Cavaliers in digs with 10.

Kristen Hurst led four San Diego players in double figures in kills with 16. She also hit .682 and added 11 digs. Noel Frohman recorded 11 kills and a match-high 16 digs, while Lindsay Sherburne posted 47 assists.

San Diego hit .276 in the match, while Virginia managed to hit only. 107. The Toreros also held a 66-46 advantage in digs.

After playing Texas Friday evening, the Cavaliers conclude play in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational with a 1:30 p.m. match Saturday against Texas Pan-American.
