The Virginia cross country teams will open their 2002 seasons at home as they host the Lou Onesty Invitational on Saturday, September 14. The Virginia women are currently ranked #16 and are coming off a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2001. The races will take place at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, the home course of the Cavailers. The men start at 10:00 am while the women’s race begins at 10:45 am.

Two other ranked teams will run in the women’s race as #11 Duke and #29 James Madison both come to Charlottesville with aspirations of making the NCAA Championships. On the men’s side, Duke is also ranked at #20 while the Tribe of William and Mary sports a #16 ranking.

Nine teams from the Commonwealth of Virginia are competing in the race, including the Cavaliers, James Madison and William & Mary. Liberty, Hampton, Richmond, Roanoke, Norfolk State and Radford join the fray, as do Howard, Duke, and Rhodes College.

Two Virginia athletes, Sharon O’Connor and Will Christian, are the defending champions of the race and both will run in this year’s event.
