CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Fla. – Virginia head swimming coach Mark Bernardino has been recognized with the American Swim Coaches Association’s (ASCA) Silver Award of Excellence. Second-year swimmer Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) has been selected to USA Swimming’s National “B” Team.

Bernardino, who is in his 25th year as Virginia’s head swimming coach, is one of seven recipients of the ASCA’s Silver Award of Excellence. The ASCA also gives Gold and Bronze Awards of Excellence. In addition to the Silver Awards, seven people received Gold Awards and five were honored with Bronze Awards at the ASCA’s annual convention.

Raab is one of 12 swimmers named to the United States’ Men’s National “B” Team by virtue of their performance at the Phillips 66 Summer Nationals held in August in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Raab finished third in the 200-meter butterfly at nationals with a time of 1:58.46. He is ranked 15th in the world in the 200 butterfly. Swimmers ranked between ninth and 16th in the world are selected as members of the National “B” Team.
