Cavaliers Fall to #2 Michigan 5-0

The University of Virginia’s Emily White made 11 saves in today’s contest but the Cavaliers fell to defending national champion Michigan 5-0 today in Durham, NC. The Wolverines scored twice in the opening five minutes to take a lead they would not relinquish as Adrienne Hortillosa assisted on both goals. Hortillosa scored the Wolverines’ fifth goal by putting the rebound of a Molly Powers shot over an outstretched White. With the loss the Cavaliers close out the regular season portion of their schedule.
Michigan got on the board in the second minute of the game after drawing a corner. Hortillosa jumped on a loose ball and sent it across the circle to Moyneur who was on the doorstep of the cage for the first goal. Less than three minutes later Hortillosa again created an opportunity and sent a flat ball to Molly Powers on the right post who tapped it in for Michigan’s second goal. The Wolverines’ third goal came off a free hit situation at the top of the circle as Lori Hillman sent the ball to Jen Zagara on the far post, who lifted the ball into the boards for Michigan’s third goal. The Wolverines had an 8-2 shot advantage and drew just the one corner while not conceding any and led 3-0 at the break.
Michigan scored early in the second half as a Kristi Gannon short corner blast was saved by White, but the rebound popped out to Jessica Rose, who lifted the ball into the cage for the fourth Wolverine goal. Hortillosa closed out the scoring in the 66th minute after Molly Powers took the ball down the right side of the field and attacked the circle. Powers’ shot was deflected by White across the mouth of the cage, where Hortillosa pounced on it and sent it to the netting with 4:41 to play.
The Cavaliers return to action next Thursday as they travel back to Duke to take on the Blue Devils in the opening round of the ACC Tournament.
