Orange Defeats Blue 16-7 in Virginia Wrestling Team's Annual Exhibition

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the annual Orange and Blue exhibition match at Memorial Gymnasium. The Orange squad, coached by UVa assistant Chuckie Connor, defeated the Blue squad, coached by Cavalier assistant Jim Stanec, by the score of 16-7. The Orange team won the first five consecutive matches of the seven total bouts in the event to jump out to a 16-0 lead and cruised to a 16-7 victory.

Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) gave the Orange team an early 3-0 lead after earning a 4-1 decision over the Blue team’s Reed Landry (McLean, Va./Potomac School) at 149. The Orange squad’s Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) recorded an 11-2 major decision victory at 165 over the Blue team’s Drew Michelotti (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) to extend the lead to 7-0. At 174, the Orange team’s Peter Kang (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) posted a 7-5 overtime decision over the Blue team’s Ram McDonnell (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) to make it a 10-0 match.

The Orange squad’s Andy DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) also posted an overtime victory after defeating the Blue squad’s Zach Freday (Akron, Ohio/Hoover) by the score of 2-1 at 197 to make it a 13-0 advantage. The Orange squad’s Brian Sticca (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) won the fifth consecutive match for his team after posting a 10-7 win over the Blue squad’s Ian DeRath (Forest, Va./Lowell (Mich.) at 125 to make it a 16-0 contest.

The Blue team recorded its first win of the event when Chet Naylor (Dallastown, Pa./McDonogh) posted a 15-6 major decision victory over the Orange team’s Joey Carpenter (Oakton, Va./Paul VI) to cut the lead to 16-4. The Blue team’s Jim Hartey (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) then earned a 6-2 decision over the Orange’s Bjorlo in the winners bout at 149 to make the final score 16-7. The were no matched scheduled for the 141, 184 and heavyweight classes in the event. A match-by-match look at the results is listed below.

The Cavaliers will return to regular season action on Saturday, November 16 when UVa travels to Morgantown, W.V. to compete in the West Virginia Open. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM.
