UVa Wrestling Finishes Second in the 2002 Virginia Quad Meet

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team hosted the 2002 Virginia Quad Meet this afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers joined the four-team field of the Kent State Golden Flashes, the Old Dominion Monarchs and the Howard Bison in the event. Kent State took first place after going 3-0 in the meet. The Golden Flashes defeated ODU 40-11, Howard 43-9 and topped UVa 33-10 in the final match of the Duals. The Cavaliers finished second by defeating Howard 32-12 and Old Dominion 27-19 before falling to KSU in the finals. The Monarchs and Bison placed third after going 0-2, with losses to both Virginia and Kent State. Howard and Old Dominion did not wrestle head-to-head in the meet.
In Dual 1, Virginia defeated Howard University by a score of 32-12. The Virginia scoring was highlighted by the Cavaliers’ Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) defeating Brandon Hogan by fall at 1:33 in the 157 weight class. The Bison’s Ephraim Walker defeated UVa’s Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy.) at 165 by the score of 5-2. Virginia’s Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) finished competition versus Howard with a 10-4 victory over James Blanton in the 174 weight class.
Kent State and Old Dominion met in Dual 2, with Kent State taking eight of ten matches. Jim Swetter of Kent State defeated Derrell Lorthridge of Old Dominion in the heavyweight class by a fall at 5:36 to highlight KSU. The Golden Flashes’ Joe DiMichele recorded a major decision victory over Old Dominion’s Wan Kathula at 133 by the score of 13-12. In the 184 weight class, Old Dominion’s Jeff Rusak won by technical fall over Kent State’s Ben Rings, 18-2.
Dual 3 saw Kent State and Howard compete, with Kent State winning, 43-9. Competition for Kent State was highlighted by Mark Lensman’s defeat of Brandon Hogan by fall at 1:20 in the 165 weight class. Howard received six team points when Derrick Butts pinned Kevin Linich 6:01 into the match at 133.
The Cavaliers wrestled the Old Dominion Monarchs in Dual 4, and UVa prevailed by a score of 27-19. For the Cavaliers, Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) pinned Blake Romano of ODU at 1:27 in the 141 weight class. At 149, UVa’s Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) defeated Mark Clark by fall at 1:48. The Monarchs’ John Starkes defeated Virginia’s Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) at 125 by major decision, 17-2.
Virginia met Kent State in Dual 5, the championship dual of the event. Winning eight of ten matches, Kent State won by a score of 33-10 . For the Cavaliers, Durkee pinned Joe Charlton at 6:35 in the 165 weight class. Nick Nemeth of Kent State continued his winning ways by defeating the Cavaliers’ Carlo-Clauss by the score of 9-5 to win the 174 division.
UVa is now 2-7 overall, 0-1 in the ACC. Virginia will return to action on Saturday, February 9th when UVa hosts the James Madison Dukes in a dual meet. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will take place at Memorial Gymnasium.
