Virginia Men's Lacrosse Receives Bid to NCAA Tournament

Charlottesville, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s lacrosse team is the third seed in the 12-team field for the 2002 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championships. This marks the 10th consecutive season the Cavaliers have received a bid to the national playoffs and the 26th berth in school history.

The Cavaliers, currently ranked fifth with a 10-3 overall record, received a first round bye and will face the winner of a first round game between Cornell and Stony Brook in the quarterfinals. Virginia’s quarterfinal game will be played May 19 (Sunday) at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.

Cornell is ranked 10th with a 10-3 overall record this season, while Stony Brook, champions of the America East Conference, is 10-6.

The Cavaliers have faced Cornell in four previous NCAA Tournaments, but they two schools haven’t faced each other since a 17-6 Cornell win in the quarterfinals of the 1988 national championship. Virginia has beaten Stony Brook both times the teams have played each other in the regular season (1999-2000).

May 18 (at Hofstra)
No. 2 Syracuse (12-2) vs. winner of Duke/Hobart
No. 4 Princeton (8-4) vs. winner of Georgetown/Manhattan

May 19 (at Johns Hopkins)
No. 3 Virginia (10-3) vs. winner of Cornell/Stony Brook
No. 1 Johns Hopkins (11-1) vs. winner of Massachusetts/Fairfield

Semifinals:
May 25 (at Rutgers)
Game 1 at 11:30 a.m.
game 2 is 45 minutes after conclusion of first game

Finals:
May 27 (at Rutgers) at 11:00 a.m.
