Virginia’s Eliese Mitchell soared past her own school record in the hammer throw today, besting her old record by over five feet with a 186′ 10″ en route to winning the event at the JMU Invitational. Mitchell also won the discus throw and finished second in the shot put despite being the top collegian in the latter. She was joined atop the winners’ podium by both Kiamesha Otey and Scott Kimball, who both won their respective 100m titles. Otey also added the long jump gold, while Carielle Doe took the 400m title. Doe and Otey also teamed with Natalie Randolph and Caroline Harvey to win the 400m relay. Tim Bilmanis helped the Cavs sweep the discus titles, besting his nearest competitor by over a meter.

On the men’s side, Walker Anderson medalled twice with runner-up honors in the hammer and a third-place finish in the shot put. Greg Blair also took the silver, tying his season best with a 4.75m in the pole vault. Andrew Filachek set a Virginia season best time in the 3K, running 8:36.07 and finishing fifth.

Mitchell’s record-setting throw marks the fourth school record she has set in 2003. Four Cavaliers earned runner-up honors, including Annie Bobiak (javelin), Rachel Marks (high jump), Caroline Harvey (long jump), and Viktoria Osipenko (pole vault).
