ATHENS, GA – Virginia men’s tennis first year Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) was defeated in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Singles Championships held at the University of Georgia. Stewart lost to K.C. Corkery of Stanford 6-3, 6-4 in Wednesday’s opening round of the 64-player tournament.

In the first set, Stewart got off to a slow start that put him in an early 2-0 deficit. Corkery would extend his advantage to 4-1 on his way to winning the first set 6-3. The second set was tight throughout, but Corkery would prevail 6-4 to win the set and the match.

Stewart and fourth year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.) open play in the 2003 NCAA Doubles Championship in Athens on Thursday. The Cavalier duo will play No. 5-8 seeded Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic of Texas A&M in the opening round of the 32-team tournament.
