Virginia Men's Soccer Announces 2003 Schedule

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia men’s soccer head coach George Gelnovatch has announced the 2003 UVa men’s soccer schedule. The Cavaliers are once again scheduled to face a variety of challenging opponents in the upcoming season. Virginia’s 2003 schedule features a minimum of 20 event dates (17 regular season games, two exhibition contests, ACC Tournament) including 12 home matches at UVa’s Kl?ckner Stadium. Of Virginia’s 17 regular season matches, the Cavaliers will play 11 contests at home, four games on the road and two contests on a neutral site before competing in the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.
Prior to the start of the 2003 regular season portion of its schedule, Virginia will host pair of home exhibition contests at Kl?ckner Stadium. UVa is schedule to face the Old Dominion Monarch’s on August 19th before meeting the South Carolina Gamecocks on August 23rd in its final exhibition tune-up before regular season play begins.
Following its two exhibition contests, UVa will kick off the regular season portion of its schedule by hosting the 2003 Virginia Soccer Classic. Joining the Cavaliers in the field of teams will be the Saint Louis Billikens, the Akron Zips and the Seton Hall Pirates. Virginia will face Seton Hall on August 29th before meeting Saint Louis on August 31st. The following weekend, UVa will travel to College Park, Md. to compete in the 2003 Maryland/FILA Classic on a neutral field at the University of Maryland. The Cavaliers are scheduled to meet the American Eagles on September 5th before facing off against the 2002 NCAA Champion UCLA Bruins on September 7th.
Following back-to-back weekends of tournament play, Virginia will dive into ACC action by returning home for its next match against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on September 13th. UVa’s contest against WFU is the first of four consecutive home matches for the Cavaliers that also includes the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers on September 17th. Virginia will then compete in an ACC showdown with the North Carolina Tar Heels on September 20th before squaring off with the William & Mary Tribe on September 24th.
The Cavaliers will then hit the road for Raleigh, N.C. to play their first true road game all year when Virginia faces the N.C. State Wolfpack in an ACC contest on September 28th. Following its conference match with NCSU, UVa will return back to Charlottesville for three consecutive home games beginning with a match against Alabama A&M on October 4th. Virginia will then host the Clemson Tigers in another ACC match on October 11th before the Cavaliers close out their three-game homestand with a match against the neighboring West Virginia Mountaineers on October 15th.
UVa will then saddle up for the closing stretch of its regular season where Virginia plays three of its final five matches on the road. The Cavaliers will first head to Durham, N.C. to face the Duke Blue Devils in an ACC contest on October 17th before returning home on October 24th to host the Liberty Flames in a non-conference match. UVa is then scheduled to play a pair of back-to-back road games for the first and only time all season when Virginia visits Greensboro, N.C. to face the UNC-Greensboro Spartans on October 28th before closing out the ACC regular season with a road match against the Maryland Terrapins in a return visit to College Park on October 31st. UVa will then return home to play its final regular season match of the year by hosting the VCU Rams on November 7th.
The Cavaliers are scheduled to compete in the 2003 ACC Championships in Cary, N.C. on November 13-16 before Virginia seeks to make its 23rd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
