Virginia field hockey captain Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) assisted Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central) on her goal today, but the Cavaliers (10-10) fell to #3-ranked and fourth-seed Maryland 5-1 in the first round of the ACC Championships. The Terrapins (18-2) advance to play #1 Wake Forest, the defending ACC Champions, on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 pm. Virginia’s Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) made 11 saves in the contest to bring her season total to 151.

The Terps jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Tiffany Marsh punched in a loose ball following a Carr save on a short corner in the 14th minute of play. Two minutes later Colleen Barbieri controlled a loose ball and took it down the left side of the pitch, scoring 1:51 after Marsh. Powley scored again 46 seconds later to stake the Terps to a 3-0 lead. Maryland went up 4-0 as Sara Silvetti swept the ball to the top of the circle for Paula Infante, who sent the ball to the boards for the Terps’ fourth goal.

Maryland drew a short corner as time expired but were unable to capitalize and the teams entered the break with the Terps holding a 4-0 lead.

The Terps’ Anja Boettcher collected a loose ball in the circle just over a minute into the second half and scored to put Maryland up 5-0.

Virginia got on the scoreboard after Flynn sent a sideline hit into the middle of the pitch to Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown). Link took the ball into the circle where she drew a short corner. On the play, Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, Va./Allentown) inserted the ball to Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Gerfen shot the ball and Flynn directed it to the nets for the Cavalier goal.

The ACC tournament continues tomorrow as #4 UNC, the second seed, plays #2 Duke, the #3 seed at 4:00. Top-ranked Wake will take on Maryland at 7:00. All games are at the University Hall Turf Field.
