CHARLOTTESVILLE – The 2003 Virginia men’s tennis concluded their fall season on Sunday as play concluded at the 2003 UVa Open at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Second year Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio) upset a pro player in the semifinals before falling in the final.

Rozek, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, upset Andrew Carlson, the No. 1 seed and the No. 854 player in the world on the ATP tour, in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0. He fell to the No. 3 seed Izak van der Merwe of Old Dominion in three sets in the final. Van der Merwe upset No. 2 seed Doug Stewart of Virginia in straight sets in the other semifinal.

In doubles, van der Merwe and Zoltan Csanadi of Old Dominion, the No. 1 seed, won the title with a win over Wade Orr and Damien Spizzo of Tennessee.
