The University of Virginia men’s cross country team has been extended an invitation to the 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championships. This is the first year since 1984 that the Cavalier men have been invited as a team to the national championships.
“We’re very excited to have been selected,” said head cross country coach Jason Dunn. “It’s a testament to the hard wortk our guys have put in over the summer and this season.”
The Cavaliers, who have been ranked as high as 15th this season, placed fourth at the NCAA Southeast Regional with 96 points, one point behind William & Mary. Earlier this season, Virginia placed fifth at the Great American Cross Country Festival, upsettting five ranked teams in the process.
Virginia is led by All-Southeast Regional performer Will Christian, who finished seventh at the regional meet. Teammate Walton Kingsbery, who ran at the 2001 NCAA Championships, also earned All-Regional honors with his 13th place finish.
The University of Northern Iowa will host the 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships, November 24, at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course, Waterloo, Iowa. The men’s race will begin at 11 a.m.
