Dec. 20, 2003

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Virginia wrestling team took 13th place with 42.5 points in the second annual Collegiate Beast of the East Invitational at the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware. The day turned out to be a record setting afternoon for Virginia’s 141-pounder Scott Moore. Moore improved his overall record to a perfect 19-0 on the season and increased his pin total this season to 14, shattering the Virginia school-record for most falls in a single season (11) in just the fourth event he has competed in this season. After racking up four more falls in the Beast of the East to win his fourth 141-pound title in as many events this season, he walked away from the competition with the Most Falls Award and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Beast of the East.

Moore picked up right where he left off in his previous three outings. Moore took first place at 141 by going 5-0 record in the event with four of his five wins coming by fall. He won the fourth 141-pound title in the fourth competition he has competed in this year. Moore also took first place at the Michigan State Open, Cornell’s Body Bar Invitational and at the Mat Town USA Invitational earlier this season.

In winning his fourth 141-pound title this year, Moore did so in record breaking fashion as he became Virginia’s all-time leader for most pins recorded in a single season at UVa. His record setting fall occurred when he pinned Bloomsburg’s Scott Schvartsman at 6:10 in his third bout of the event. Moore’s first pin of the competition came against East Stroudsburg’s Artie Christ at 1:54. With that fall, he tied former Virginia record holders Jim Harshaw and Matt Roth, who each posted 11 falls during the 1999 season for the Cavaliers. Moore’s second fall of the event, his pin of Schvartsman, propelled him into solo first place at UVa all-time for most pins in a single season with 12 falls and counting. He put the finishing touches on his day by posting two more falls including one over #12 ranked Rob Becker from George Mason in the 141-pound championship match at 2:19 to seal the 141-pound title. Becker was coming off the heels of a 141-pound title at the Las Vegas Invitational.

Virginia’s Bjorlo went 3-3 and placed sixth in the event and came out of the gates in blazing fashion at 157 by winning his first three matches, including his first two matches by fall. Bjorlo pinned Duke’s Brandon Foose at 4:01 before pinning Delaware’s Tom Lawhorn at 6:34 before knocking off #5 seeded Jesse Pearce from Old Dominion by the score of 5-3 in his third match of the event. Bjorlo suffered his first loss of the event in his fourth bout when he lost to #1 seeded Jake Percival from Ohio. Bjorlo eventual finished in sixth place and was UVa’s only only other placewinner aside from Moore.

The Cavaliers’ Aaron Martin posted a pair of victories and finished 2-2 at 149-pounds. Martin got things started with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Wagner’s Nick Lotz in his first match before posting a 6-5 decision over George Mason’s Robert Henry in his third bout. UVa’s Andrew Leffler also won a pair of matches after going 2-2 in the heavyweight class. Leffler won his first match following a 5-3 decision over Princeton’s Kriss Berr before he defeated Wagner’s John Cichon by the narrow margin of 1-0 two bouts later.

The Cavaliers’ 125-pounder Brian Sticca competed in his first event of the season and finished 1-1. He posted his first win of the year after recording a 6-5 decision over Binghamton’s Kyle Willard in his first bout. Sticca eventually pulled out of competition following a medical default. Ryan Stewart, also a 125-pounder, went 1-2 and recorded his first fall of the season after he pinned Delaware’s Ryan Gralewski at 1:06 in his second match of the event. Virginia’s 157-pounder Paul Dunstan also finished 1-2 and picked up a 7-3 victory over Appalachian State’s Alex Davis in his first match of the event.

UVa’s trio of Drew Michelotti (165-pounds), Michael Grogan (174-pounds) and Paul Bowman (149-pounds) went 0-2 in the event, while 197-pounder Scott Smith finished 0-1 before missing his next bout following a medical default.

The Cavaliers did not have a competitor at 133-pounds or at 184-pounds in the event.

Virginia will return to action on December 28-29 when UVa travels to Greensboro, N.C. to compete in UNCG’s Southern Scuffle.
