CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia has named Shane Howell as the assistant coach for men’s golf, head coach Mike Moraghan announced on Monday.

“Shane will be a great addition to our team. He possesses enormous enthusiasm and a great deal of golf knowledge,” Moraghan said. “He will be involved in all phases of our program including recruiting, tournament preparation, and the development of our younger players. I have every confidence that he will be an outstanding coach.”

Howell earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies in 1999 at Lamar University where he also played golf. Howell has been the assistant golf professional at the Glenmore Country Club in Keswick since 2000. Following graduation, Howell worked as the outside assistant and caddie master at the New Orleans (La.) Country Club. Prior to enrolling at Lamar, Howell attended Temple College for two years where he earned Division II Junior College All-America honors in 1995.

“I am very happy and excited to join the University of Virginia mens golf team,” Howell said. “I look forward to working with Coach Moraghan, the student-athletes, and the University of Virginia.”

The Cavaliers tee off the spring schedule on Feb. 9 at the Rice Intercollegiate.
