Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team recorded a 14-6 victory over the Richmond Spiders in Richmond’s home-opener at Pitt Field this afternoon. The win improved UVa’s record to 10-1 on the season.

The Cavaliers got off to an early 3-0 lead in the first, off three hits. Matt Street reached base on balls and Ryan Zimmerman singled to left field, setting up for Joe Koshansky’s double to center field, allowing for Zimmerman and Street to cross the plate. Matt Dunn followed with a double, scoring Koshansky.

LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) began the Spiders’ response, in the bottom of the first, with a single to left field. Sophomore Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) recorded his first triple of the season, allowing LeNoir to score. Zeskind plated off freshman Josh Farkes’ (Boston, Mass.) RBI, making the score 3-2 at the end of one.

Virginia added seven more runs in the second and Richmond tallied two. Freshman Matt McKenna (Richmond, Va.) and LeNoir each posted an RBI, with freshman Vince Riggi (Saratoga Springs, Fla.) and McKenna crossing the plate. At the end of two, the score was 10-4.

In the third, Mark Reynolds hit a homerun over the left field wall, posting the only run for the Cavaliers. Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.) scored the lone run for the Spiders, when he singled to left field, in the third and the inning ended with a score of 11-5.

The Cavaliers recorded one run a piece in the fourth and fifth innings.

Richmond responded in the seventh, putting a run on the board when Zeskind scored off an error by Virginia shortstop, Reynolds, making the score 13-6. In the eighth, Koshansky homered over the center field wall.

Starting on the mound for Richmond was junior Tim Rice (Brookfield, Conn.), he pitched the first inning and four batters into the second. Senior Nathan Kuchta (Victor, N.Y.) pitched four innings and Jim O’Leary (Wantagh, N.Y) took over beginning in the sixth. Sophomore Wyatt Stewart (Washington, D.C.) came in, in the ninth, to close out the game.

Virginia will return to action on March 5-7 when the Cavaliers host the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils. All three games will be played at Virginia’s Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
