Virginia’s Andrea Pfeiffer had 13 saves, three caused turnovers and five ground balls to lead the Cavaliers (4-2) defensively while Amy Appelt had three goals and two assists to lead the Hoos at the other end, but UVa still fell to Princeton 12-9 today in Princeton. The Cavaliers opened the scoring but fell behind 7-4 at halftime despite a pair of assists from Caitlin Banks. Ashley Dodson added five ground balls for the Hoos.

Pfeiffer started the opening goal sequence with a save and at the other end of the field Banks fed Courtney Young, who was in the arc. Young converted the pass for the early 1-0 lead 3:21 into the game. Princeton answered with a goal from Lindsey Biles, but Virginia went up again as Dodson scooped up a ground ball and Appelt challenged from the goal line, scoring three minutes later to put Virginia up 2-1. Again the Tigers tied the game with an unassisted goal from Elizabeth Pillion. Molly Urlock caused a turnover on a Princeton challenge and Pfeiffer scooped up the ground ball, starting a clear. At the other end of the field, Banks fed Morgan Thalenberg on a break and the Cavaliers led 3-2 less than 10 minutes into the game. Princeton then scored a pair of goals in just over a minute to take a 4-3 lead.

A Pfeiffer save started the tying goal as in the transition Appelt drew a shooting space foul at the top of the arc, and she converted the 8-meter to tie the game at 4-4 with 6:33 to play in the half. The Tigers closed the half with three consecutive goals to lead 7-4 at the break.

Princeton opened the scoring in the second half to take an 8-4 lead, but Banks won the next draw and got the ball to Kim Connors, who passed the ball to Jess Wasilewski while she drove to the cage. Wasilewski fed it back to Connors, who scored less than a minute after the Princeton goal to keep the margin at three. Theresa Sherry then scored twice for the Tigers to give them a 10-5 lead.

Elizabeth Pinney scooped up a loose ball in the defensive arc and started the ball upfield where Appelt challenged from the top and scored, pulling the Cavaliers back within four. Princeton went on another two-goal run to push the margin to six at 12-6 with 9:19 to play in regulation.

From there the Cavalier defense shut down the Tigers. Pinney caused a turnover in the arc and Connors picked up the loose ball. At the other end of the field, Appelt drove to the cage and fed to Banks on the other side of the arc. Banks scored with 6:14 to go in regulation. Dodson then picked up an overthrow in the Cavaliers defensive third and the Cavaliers challenged again as Tyler Leachman drove to the cage and flipped the ball to Connors, who converted the pass with 2:57 to play. Again Pfeiffer made a save and the Hoos worked the ball upfield where Appelt drove behind the cage and fed Young who was in the center of the arc with 22 seconds left in regulation. Virginia won the final draw but was unable to convert.

Appelt’s hat trick was her sixth of the year.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday, March 20 as they host ACC-rival UNC.
