CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia pitcher Matt Avery (McLean, Va./Landon Prep) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Pitcher of the Week following his performance in UVa’s 3-1 victory in game two of an ACC doubleheader against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday (April 10th) in Charlottesville. Avery, a sophomore right hander, pitched his first collegiate complete game in Virginia’s 3-1 win over Clemson. The McLean, Va., native tossed 9.0 innings of four hit baseball to improve his overall record to 4-1 on the season. Avery allowed just one run while striking out five Tiger batters.

Avery is the third Cavalier pitcher to claim the ACC Pitcher of the Week award this season. Virginia’s Andrew Dobies (March 29th) and Casey Lambert (March 15th) were also honored as the ACC Pitcher of the Week earlier this year. Avery’s selection also marks the fifth time total a UVa baseball player was recognized for their performance this season by the conference, as Joe Koshansky was twice named the ACC Player of the Week (February 17 and March 15th.)

For the season, Avery stands 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA through 51.0 innings of action. He has struck out 32 batters and is holding opposing hitters to a .269 batting average.
