Cavaliers Top Duke 13-4 in Men's Lacrosse Action

Charlottesville, Va. – A trio of Cavaliers scored scored three goals apiece and the defense held Duke scoreless for more than 40 minutes as Virginia kept its playoff hopes alive with a 13-4 win over the Blue Devils in men’s lacrosse action this afternoon at sunny Kl?ckner Stadium.
The win is the Cavaliers’ first conference win of the season as they improve to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. Duke suffered its worst loss of the season in falling to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.
Virginia is third seed in next weekend’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament as the Cavaliers face host North Carolina in the second semifinal game Friday night at approximately 8:30 pm. Duke, the fourth seed, faces top seed Maryland at 6 pm in the first semifinal matchup.
Duke got on the board first as Lee Skandalaris scored on the game’s first shot 71 seconds into the contest. Virginia sophomore Matt Ward tied the game a short time later in similar fashion by notching the first of his two goals on UVa’s first shot.
John Christmas and Foster Gilbert scored 45 seconds apart to push Virginia’s lead to 3-1 less than five minutes in. The Blue Devils fought back behind goals by freshman Matt Danowski and Matt Zash. Zash’s goal 50 seconds into the second quarter forced the first tie since early in the game and also marked Duke’s final goal until the game’s final minutes.
Gilbert, making his first start at attack, scored his second goal of the day at the 13:18 mark of the second quarter by knocking in a loose ball in front of the crease to give the Cavaliers the lead for good. Joe Yevoli, Hunter Kass and Matt Poskay scored later in the quarter to extend Virginia’s lead to 7-3 at halftime.
The Cavaliers held Duke scoreless in the third quarter as goalie Tillman Johnson, making his final Kl?ckner Stadium appearance, turned aside three of the Blue Devils’ five shots in the quarter. UVa’s scoring run reached eight as Yevoli scored twice, and Gilbert and Ward once each in the quarter.
Poskay scored both UVa goals in the final period as the Cavaliers’ lead ballooned to 13-3. Duke’s scoring drought ended at 42:53 as freshman Grant Byczek scored an extra-man goal with 1:17 to play.
Gilbert scored three times to equal his season total coming in, while Poskay scored a career-high three times. Yevoli’s three goals ended a two-game scoreless drought. Johnson finished with 13 saves before giving way to reserves Ryan Thompson and Doug Brody for the final three minutes.
