CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Tailback Michael Johnson (Newport News, Va.) and cornerback Marcus Hamilton (Centreville, Va.) earned the Rock Weir Award, the coaching staff announced prior to Virginia’s spring football game on Saturday.

Johnson, a 5-10 sophomore, red-shirted last season. He is expected to be a factor on offense and in the return game this fall. One of the fastest players on the team, Johnson tied for the team lead with an average of 5.1 yards per carry as a true freshman in 2002. In the 2004 Spring Game, Johnson rushed for 30 yards on nine carries.

Hamilton, a 6-0 sophomore, earned Honorable Mention Freshman All-America honors from Rivals.com last season. An Academic All-ACC honoree, he saw action in every game last fall as a reserve and made 29 tackles. He’s expected to compete for a starting role this fall. In the 2004 Spring Game, Hamilton recorded four tackles, an interception to seal his team’s win, and a pass break-up.

Virginia kicks off the 2004 season on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Temple in Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field.
