CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The #15 ranked University of Virginia baseball team saw its school-record 14-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the #4 ranked Miami Hurricanes after suffering an 8-0 loss in a non-conference game in front of 2,104 spectators at Mark Light Stadium. Miami scored three runs in the third inning, added a pair of runs in the fifth inning and then posted three more runs in the eighth to deal UVa its first loss this season by shutout. Virginia’s last loss before tonight happened on March 28th, nearly one month ago, after an 8-7 loss to N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C.

After two innings of scoreless baseball, Miami jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Hurricanes’ Jim Burt got things started when he cranked a two-run home run to left field that also scored teammate Adam Ricks who singled to right field to reach base. Four batters later with the bases loaded, UM’s Erick San Pedro singled to shortstop to plate Brian Barton from third to give Miami a three-run advantage.

The Hurricanes extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Richard Giannotti dropped a RBI-double just into fair territory inside the right field line that scored Burt from third base. Barton also scored a run for Miami on the play on a fielding error on a play at second base on Giannotti that lifted the Hurricanes to a five-run lead.

Miami tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take an 8-0 lead in the ball game. UM’s Joey Hooft and Ricks drove in two of the three runs in the inning.

UVa starting pitcher Andrew Dobies (6-1) suffered his first loss of the year after going 7.0 innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out a game-high eight batters in the loss.

Miami starting pitcher J.D. Cockroft (4-3) picked up the win after going 7.2 scoreless innings. He scattered three hits, all after the fifth inning, and struck out four batters in the win.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 34-8 overall. The victory improves Miami’s record to 29-8 on the season. The Hurricanes take a one game to none lead in the three-game series.

The Cavaliers and Hurricanes will return to action on Saturday, April 24th when the two teams play the second contest of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Mark Light Stadium.
