CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team will host Atlantic Coast Conference rival N.C. State in a critical doubleheader Saturday (April 24) beginning at noon at The Park. The doubleheader marks the final home contests for three UVa fourth-years – pitcher Joanna Barstad (Canby, Ore./Canby), shortstop Heather Field (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln), and first baseman Hannah Owings (Issaquah, Wash./Liberty).

The Cavaliers, who have won five consecutive games, stand at 34-23 overall and 2-4 in the ACC. N.C. State is 32-21 overall and 3-3 in the conference. NCSU is currently third in the ACC standings while UVa is in fifth place one game behind the Wolfpack.

The Wolfpack is in its first season of varsity competition. The two teams split a pair of one-run decisions earlier this season in the Hoo’s Who Tournament. UVa won the first game 5-4 on March 26 and N.C. State won the championship game of the tournament 3-2 in 10 innings on March 28.

Virginia has been playing well as of a late. After falling to second-ranked Florida State 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on April 17, the Cavaliers scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 upset win over the Seminoles in the nightcap.

In a pair of doubleheader sweeps over Liberty and James Madison earlier this week, the Cavaliers erupted for 39 runs on 55 hits while outscoring the opposition 29-8. The 55 hits helped raise Virginia’s team batting average to .294.
