NEW YORK- – Former Virginia captain Matt Schaub (West Chester, Pa.) wasselected in the 2004 National Football League’s Draft on Saturday.

Schaub, a 6-5 quarterback, was the 27th pick in the third round (90thselection overall) by the Atlanta Falcons.

Considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in school history, Schaubowns virtually every major passing record (single-game, season andcareer) in UVa history. The Most Valuable Player of the 2003Continental Tire Bowl finished his UVa career with at least 23 schoolrecords. A player in a school record 40 games as a quarterback,Schaub finished his career as the Atlantic Coast Conference forcompletion percentage (.670). He led the Cavaliers to fivecome-from-behind fourth quarter wins during his last two seasons.Schaub owns UVa career records for yards passing (7502), touchdownpasses (56), completions (716), attempts (1069), completionpercentage (.670), 300-yard games (8), and 200-yard games (20).

The 2002 ACC Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year alsoearned first-team All-State by the Virginia Sports InformationDirectors Association (VaSID) and the Roanoke Times as a senior. Atwo-time member of the All-ACC Academic Football Team, Schaubcompeted as a graduate student in 2003 after receiving hisundergraduate degree in economics in May 2003. He received UVa’s JohnAcree Memorial Trophy, given to the football player who exemplifiesthe highest qualities of leadership, cooperative spirit, andunselfish service, and the Ben Wilson Award as UVa’s most outstandingoffensive player following his senior season.

Schaub’s parents currently reside in Marietta, Ga.

Joining the professional ranks as free agents were Art Thomas (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Jamaine Winborne (Chesapeake, Va.). Thomas, a 6-2 wide receiver and defensive end, signed with the New York Jets, while Winborne, a 5-10 cornerback, signed with the New York Giants.
