GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team is the third seed in the 13th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship, which will be held May 14-16 at the Seminole Softball Complex in Tallahassee, Fla. The Cavaliers (38-24, 6-4 ACC) begin play in the six-team, double elimination tournament on Friday, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. when they play sixth-seeded Maryland (31-25, 1-9 ACC) in game two of the tourney.

The Cavaliers’ 6-4 mark in ACC play tied North Carolina for second in the standings, but the Tar Heels earned the second seed by virtue of a doubleheader sweep over UVa during regular season play.

Florida State (54-9, 9-1 ACC), ranked second in the nation, is the top seed, while North Carolina (42-18, 6-4 ACC) is the second seed. Georgia Tech (41-15, 5-5 ACC), the 25th ranked team in the nation, is seeded fourth and N.C. State (32-25, 3-7 ACC) is the fifth seed.

The winner of the Virginia-Maryland game moves on to play second-seeded North Carolina Friday at 7:30 p.m. The loser of the UVa-Maryland game drops to the lower half of the bracket and will play at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

The Cavaliers have advanced to the championship game of the ACC Tournament four times in the last six years (1998, 1999, 2000 and 2003). Virginia has played in the championship game of the ACC Tournament seven times in the 12-year history of the tourney. UVa won the 1994 ACC Tournament by defeating Florida State 3-0 in the title game.
