LONG BEACH, Calif. – Former University of Virginia swimmer Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) advanced to the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials Wednesday evening (July 7) at the Charter All Digital Aquatic Centre in Long Beach, Calif. In addition, rising third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) placed fifth in the finals of the 400-meter freestyle.

Moses, a 2000 Olympic gold and silver medalist, placed fourth in the semifinals of the 100-meter breast with a time of 1:01.82 to advance to Thursday’s final. Moses was second in the first semifinal heat and fourth overall. Brendan Hansen is the top qualifier heading the finals as he broke Moses’ American record with a time of 1:00.13. Moses’ former mark was 1:00.21. Moses was fourth after the morning preliminaries, clocking a time of 1:02.27.

Crippen, the 2003 and 2004 ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Year, placed fifth in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:50.72. He qualified for the finals by placing fifth with a time of 3:53.36. Crippen will compete in the 1500-meter freestyle on July 14.

The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials continue Thursday with several Cavaliers competing. In addition to Moses in the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke, rising third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) and 2004 UVa graduate Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) will swim the women’s and men’s 100-meter backstroke, respectively. Third-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) and second-year Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) will compete in the 400-meter freestyle.
