Blue Defeats Orange In Virginia Wrestling's Blue/Orange Exhibition, 18-6

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Blue team defeated the Orange team by the score of 18-6 in the annual Virginia wrestling program’s Blue/Orange Exhibition match. The Blue squad won seven of the nine individual bouts, including five of the seven matches that counted in team scoring, to post a 12-point victory.

The night started off with two play-in matches that both resulted in victories for the Blue squad. Jim Hartey recorded a 9-1 major decision over Conor Manley in the 157 weight class, and Chudi Uraih defeated Brendan Raedy of the Orange team 3-2 at 184-pounds. Hartey and Uraih each advanced to the team scoring bouts at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively. .

Anthony Burke put the first points on the board for the Blue team to give it a 3-0 lead after posting a 7-4 win over Adam Kimbrell in the 125 weight class. But Paul Dunstan helped the Orange team tie the match at 3-3 at 149-pounds when he defeated Drew DiPasquale.

However, the Blue team quickly answered back as Will Durkee pinned Drew Michelotti at 1:44 to give the Blue team the lead back for good at 9-3. Durkee?s pin was the only fall of the match. In the 174 weight class match, Rocco Caponi recorded a 4-2 overtime win for the Blue team as he took down Damian Johnson, extending the Blue team?s lead to 12-3. Nick Smith swung the momentum in Orange?s favor as he took down heavyweight Andrew Leffler of the Blue team, 7-2, to bring Orange team within six points at 12-6. But the Blue team would win the final two bouts to pull away for the victory.

Jim Hartey added to the Blue team?s lead, making the team score 15-6 as he defeated Paul Bjorlo in the 157 weight class, 5-4. The Blue team closed out the day with a victory at 184 when Kyle Narkiewicz defeated Chudi Uraih 4-3 to make the final score 18-6.

The Cavaliers will begin the regular season portion of their 2004-05 schedule on Saturday, November 13th when Virginia travels to Edinboro, Pa. to compete in the Edinboro Quad Meet. UVa will face Appalachian State at noon and Findlay at 2:00 PM before meeting Edinboro at 4:00 PM.
