CARY, N.C. – The #4 seeded University of Virginia men’s soccer team defeated the #5 seeded Duke Blue Devils by the score of 3-1 in the quarterfinal round (first round) of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Championship at SAS Soccer Stadium. UVa’s Jeremy Barlow scored the game-winning goal and Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Burke made five saves to help the Cavaliers advance to the ACC semifinals for a showdown with the #1 seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Friday.

With its victory in the first round of the event, UVa’s remains undefeated in the 18-year history of the ACC Tournament during the quarterfinal round. The Cavaliers are now 27-9-5 all-time in the ACC Tournament and UVa is just one win away from landing a spot in the ACC Championship for the sixth consecutive season and the 15th time in 18 tournaments.

After both teams played a scoreless first half of soccer, Virginia took a 1-0 lead at 63:20 when Mike Littlefield scored the first goal of the match. Littlefield headed a goal following a play set up by teammates David Rosenbaum and Ian Holder to give his team a one-goal lead. The Cavaliers increased their lead to 2-0 at 66:42 when Rosenbaum found Barlow with a cross into the box where Barlow one-timed the ball for the eventual game-winning goal.

Duke cut Virginia’s lead to 2-1 at 69:41 when Blake Camp headed in a cross off of a free kick by Kyle Helton to pull the Blue Devils within one goal of the Cavaliers. But UVa added an insurance goal at 77:51 when Ian Holder took a feed from Barlow and put it away for a goal to make the score 3-1.

UVa’s Burke made five saves in the win, while the Blue Devils’ Justin Trowbridge made five saves in the loss.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 15-4-0 overall. The loss drops Duke’s record to 14-5-0 overall. The Cavaliers are now 35-31-7 all-time against the Blue Devils in men’s soccer.

UVa will return to action on Friday, November 12th when Virginia faces Wake Forest in the ACC semifinals. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM and will be played at SAS Soccer Stadium.
