Virginia Beats Delaware State, 74-47

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team recorded its third consecutive win in the home opener with a 74-47 victory over Delaware State on Tuesday.
“I thought we were a little too aggressive tonight,” said UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. “We needed to redeem ourselves from last Tuesday’s (exhibition) game. We played better tonight.”
In the first half, UVa opened with a 15-0 lead and never looked back. Paced by senior Kate Kreager’s (Oak Hill, Va.) 12 points and freshman Sharnee Zoll`s (Marlboro, N.J.) 10 points in the stanza, the Cavaliers entered the locker room with a 23-point advantage, 45-22.
In the second half, UVa built its lead to as many as 32 points, 69-37 with 4:31 to go.
Kreager finished with a career-high 21 points.
“Kate had a tremendous night, “Ryan added. “She’s really focused and ready to play.”
Senior Jocelyn Logan-Friend (Cheverly, Md.) added 12 points, while senior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) recorded her second double-double (22nd of her career) of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Zoll had a season-high 10 points, while senior LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) dished out a career-high 10 assists.
“Sharnee’s really proven she’s a true point guard for us,” Ryan said.
“We’re such a better team with (Sharnee) out there,” Kreager said. “She’s a freshman and will make mistakes, but her positives outweigh everything else.”
The Lady Hornets had no players in double figures. Senior Endea Mathis and freshman Raquel Collier each came off the bench for a team-high eight points.
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Delaware State, 48-25.
Virginia continues its three-game home stand with Richmond on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.
